Motivational Posters

Make eye patch therapy more fun for your child. The used ortopad patches can be stuck on the poster so that after some time a colourful 3-D image (Fish, dragon, snake, and princess) is created. That way your child can associate wearing the eye patch with the progress of the picture.

Screening

Screening
Since there may be no obvious signs to indicate a functional weakness of vision (amblyopia), all children should have an ophthalmic / orthoptic examination on the second year of life in addition to the usual screening examinations. Strabismus is not harmless or just a minor cosmetic defect- it not only causes unilateral visual impairment but also severe impairments of binocular vision. Only early ophthalmological / orthoptic intervention can prevent this happening.

My child gets a pair of glasses

After an eye examination at the eye-clinic, the glasses are fitted by an optician or dispensing optician. Children's glasses should be comfortable and fit securely without slipping. They should be large enough to prevent the child from looking over them. Allowing your child to help choose their glasses will aid compliance. After the initial period of getting used to the new glasses, children usually wear them quite happily. One important factor is the parent's positive attitude towards the glasses. The glasses don't weaken the eyes, but help correct an abnormality of the eye (long and short sightedness or astigmatism). They create a clear, sharply –focussed image on the retina of both eyes. Due to the rapid increase in the size of the eyes in the first few years of life, regular check-ups are necessary to ensure that the prescription is still correct. If there has been a change in refraction a new prescription will be issued. After the initial familiarisation phase, visual acuity, eye position and efficacy of the glasses are checked at the eye-clinic. In a small number of cases, the strabismus and functional impairment of vision are remedied by wearing the glasses alone. In many cases, however, additional patch therapy is required.

The Importance of an Eye Examination for your child

In contrast to many other diseases, strabismus and functional impairment in visual acuity (amblyopia) are not painful conditions. A distinction is made between congenital and acquired forms of strabismus. Often, it is the squint which is noticed first. Nevertheless, strabismus is a condition to be taken seriously because if left untreated, 80% of affected children can develop a functional impairment of vision (amblyopia). Older children and adults may also suffer an adverse psychological effect when condition results in a noticeable squint. Disorders of eye movements or improved processing of visual information may be present. Childhood strabismus may also have the hereditary component. Clouding of the lens of the eye (cataract), long or shortsightness and astigmatism can lead to a poor or distorted retinal image and may therefore be contributing factors to strabismus or amblyopia..
Diseases and tumours of the retina must be ruled out or diagnosed at an early stage as causes of strabismus. This is why an examination must be performed with dilated pupils.

Diagnosing Strabismus

Orthoptist's are concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders of monocular and binocular vision.
The treatment of strabismus is performed in orthotic departments (often situated in the Eye Department of the local hospital or in special clinics).
Effective treatment of strabismus requires the early diagnosis and treatment of young children with this condition. The chances of successfully treating congenital strabismus decrease if treatment commences after the age of 3.
Effective treatment of strabismus (squint) requires early diagnosis and treatment of young children with this condition. Treatment is most successful when it commences before the age of 3. If diagnosis and treatment is delayed the chances of success are unfortunately decreased.
Strabismus is a serious condition, which if left untreated can cause a permanent loss of vision in one eye ( amblyopia ) and a consequent loss of binocular vision. In this case the child will not have normal depth perception and consequently will prevent this happening.
