Diagnosing Strabismus

Orthoptist's are concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders of monocular and binocular vision.
The treatment of strabismus is performed in orthotic departments (often situated in the Eye Department of the local hospital or in special clinics).
Effective treatment of strabismus requires the early diagnosis and treatment of young children with this condition. The chances of successfully treating congenital strabismus decrease if treatment commences after the age of 3.
Effective treatment of strabismus (squint) requires early diagnosis and treatment of young children with this condition. Treatment is most successful when it commences before the age of 3. If diagnosis and treatment is delayed the chances of success are unfortunately decreased.
Strabismus is a serious condition, which if left untreated can cause a permanent loss of vision in one eye ( amblyopia ) and a consequent loss of binocular vision. In this case the child will not have normal depth perception and consequently will prevent this happening.
